I.  PRINCIPAL’S COMMENTS

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the New Year and the “stretch run” to the end of the semester.  Teachers and students are completing courses, assignments, exam preparation and final exams.  Attention to home study is very important at this time of the year and I would encourage all parents to support their children in this endeavor.

With the end of the semester comes many changes.  Students will soon be changing to their second semester teachers and new timetables.  Teaching staff will be changing as those completing temporary contracts leave and those new or returning from leave arrive.  Remember to review new course outlines with your children at the start of the semester.  Note course content and classroom expectations.  Congratulations to those students who have completed Graduation requirements as of the end of the month.

School counselors are now beginning the course selection process for the 2011-2012 school year.  I would ask you to review the course selection options and formalize yourself with the course calendar on our Dover Bay website.  Careful planning for next year pays big dividends for the future!

I would also remind parents that this year spring break is two weeks long.  The last day of school will be Friday, March 11th. and first day back will be Monday, March 28.

Good luck to all students on your final exams and the start of the new semester

Sincerely,

John Blain, Principal

CompletionSchoolGr. 9 –12 (Wed. Jan. 26 – Fri. Jan. 28)

We will be running completion school once again this semester. Completion school is for students who have not passed a first semester course, but who are close to passing it. A student may be recommended for completion school at the teacher’s discretion.

If Completion School is recommended, the classroom teacher will call parents to discuss the opportunity to complete the course. If the student takes advantage of this opportunity, a package of work will be provided for the student to complete. Upon successful completion the student will receive 50% as a final school mark for the course.

Students will have to come into the school starting on the afternoon of Wednesday January 26th through Friday January 28th until they have completed their package of work.

Grade 8 Exam Week

Grade 8 students will only be writing a math exam during the week of exams (Jan. 24 – 28). However, grade 8 students that have received and “I” (Incomplete status) in one of their academic courses may be asked to come in during exam week to complete work. Please refer to the exam schedule to see dates referring to subject areas. Subject teachers will be contacting parents to inform them if this is required.

DRAMA NEWS – Mr. Anderson & Ms. Schwarze

HeARTS Colour– On January 13-15, the grade 9 and grade 9/10 Performing Arts classes sang, danced, and performed monologues and scenes of their creation, a very well-received playbuilt play.  Based on their own vision and the writings of drama students over the years, the show was an enthusiastic testimony to the essential and humanizing nature of the Arts in all of our lives.

A quote from Placido Domingo:

“The Arts stimulate the very qualities that make us human and are an essential component in a whole child approach to education. Arts education engages young people in critical skills essential to success in the 21st century economy and global society: the ability to communicate [and] empathize for other human beings, the development of abstract thought, and the ability to work as part of a team.”

Audition opportunities

As audition opportunities come in regularly, acting students should regularly check the callboard.

MUSICAL THEATRE – Ms. Schwarze

Auditions for next year’s West Side Story are coming up, so students should sign up on the call board at the entrance to the drama room.  Students should then be listening for announcements and checking the callboard for their audition time when the list goes up.  Musical Theatre students should look to doverbayband.com (click Recordings) for music and prepare a scene with a scene partner to one of the numbers. Please choose a song based on the character you would like to play and ensure that you are choosing a song in your vocal range.

DEER AWARE Nanaimo is offering a reward of $1000 for information leading to the arrest of the criminals. If you witness someone who looks like they may be poachers call the police immediately.

If you witness a deer who has been wounded by an arrow call this number: (24 hour poaching hotline) 1877 952 7277 or *7277 on your cell

It is important to stay with the injured deer so that conservation officers can locate the deer. " -- message from DEER AWARE Nanaimo

TRIPLE P GROUP FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN 11 TO 14 YEARS OF AGE

Raising teenagers can be challenging but this task can be less stressful if parents don’t have to do it all on their own.  Getting support in Triple P Group Course can be very reassuring as well as provide positive strategies to help you promote your teenager’s development.

In Group Triple P Course you’ll learn about:

  • Providing a home that guides and supports teenagers as they strive to become independent, well-adjusted young adults
  • Helping teens to become skilled at making good personal decisions
  • Negotiating rules, responsibilities and privileges
  • Staying calm when inevitable conflicts arise
  • Being realistic – every teen and every parent will make mistakes.  Most mistakes are minor and parents learn as they go along
  • Taking care of yourself as a parent

A Triple P Group is free of charge and is for parents of children 11 to 14 years.  Next group begins January 17 – March 7, 2011 on Monday evenings: 6:30 – 8:30 pm.  To register or for more information, contact Denise at 250-713-6102.
