LIFE SKILLS 8 LS 8
(Foods/Sewing)
For Foods and Nutrition courses, students must provide one large 3-line loose-leaf binder, and will be expected to wear aprons when cooking. Aprons will not be provided by the school.

SEWING - For Sewing, students will complete two sewing projects. The following supplies would be helpful: spools of thread (any colours), scraps of cotton or cotton/poly blend fabric, tape measure, small scissors. All kept in a named container.

FOODS AND NUTRITION 9/10 FN 9/10
Topics to be covered in this course include food safety, sanitary precautions and the principles of good nutrition as they apply to meal planning and preparation. Cooking principles of fruit, vegetables, eggs, milk, cheese, meats, etc. Baking skills and foods for entertaining will be covered.

FOODS AND NUTRITION 9/10 XFN 9/10
This half semester course includes many of the aspects of the regular FN 9/10 course. It may be combined with CAPP 9 and CAPP 10.

FOODS 10 CAFETERIA FN 10
Students will be actively involved in the School Cafeteria Program. Food production and aspects such as safety and sanitary food preparation will be required. This course is an excellent opportunity to gain theoretical and practical food service skills.
Prerequisite: FN 9

INTRODUCTORY FOODS AND NUTRITION 11 IFN 11
This course is designed for the student who has not taken FN 9/10. This course will provide the basic skills required for efficient food preparation. Students will study topics such as human nutrition, safety and sanitation, work organization, menu planning and preparation, and meal saving.

FOODS AND NUTRITION 11 FN 11
This course provides the knowledge and training in foods required for personal and family use as well as the principles underlying the study of nutrition, safety, sanitation management and food preparation. Topics include work organization, food purchasing, use of prepared and partially prepared foods, meal planning, cookery techniques, and the serving of meals.
Prerequisite: FN 9/10 or IFN 11

FOODS AND NUTRITION 11 FN 11S
(2 credit)
This half-semester course includes many of the aspects of the regular FN 11 course. This course must be chosen in combination with CAPP 11.

CLOTHING AND TEXTILES 9/10 CT 9/10
An introductory course that will include wardrobe planning, study of colour and personal types, fitting techniques, use of interfacing, application of regular zipper, and a study of natural fibers. Projects will consist of a simple top or dress made from a commercial pattern using cotton or cotton-blend, a skirt or pants with a fitted waistline and capped zipper made from a commercial pattern, and a garment of choice using new techniques.

CLOTHING AND TEXTILES 9/10 XCT 9/10
This half semester course includes many of the aspects of the regular CT 9/10 course. It may be combined with CAPP 9 or CAPP 10.

INTRODUCTORY CLOTHING AND TEXTILES 11 ICT 11
It is mainly a basic clothing construction course and learning evolves some creating of simple projects and easy pattern understanding through to developing more difficult skills. Garments sewn will be personal choices and might include a blouse, skirt, and dress. Students will learn to apply the art elements in making fashion choices. Other topics covered could include natural fibers and fabrics, labels, alterations and using a serger.

CLOTHING AND TEXTILES 11 CT 11
This course is a development of techniques learned in Clothing and Textiles 9/10 or Introductory Clothing and Textiles 11 and involves more study of textiles and their care. Garments of choice will be constructed from commercial patterns.

CT 11 satisfies both Fine Arts 11 and Applied Skills 11 requirements.
Prerequisites: CT 9/10 or ICT 11

CLOTHING AND TEXTILES 12 CT 12
This is mainly a construction course. The student will have the opportunity to further an interest in tailoring and pattern drafting and design. Special fabrics such as pile, leather, sheers, plaids, knits, etc., are studied. Projects will include selections in special fabrics and a man's or child's garment. Students will learn about textiles, garment and pattern industries and about merchandizing of clothing and fabrics.
Prerequisites: CT 11

TEXTILE ARTS AND CRAFTS 10 TAC 10
This is a course including a variety of crafts such as soft toy making, working with dried flowers, embroidery, room accessories, seasonal decorations, etc. Different techniques will be used to complete several projects. Design and art principles will be studied.

Students will be required to complete several projects (crafts). Supplies are provided by the student.

TEXTILE ARTS AND CRAFTS 10 TAC 9/10 S
This half-semester course includes many of the aspects of the regular TAC 10 course. It must be chosen in combination with CAPP 9 or CAPP 10.

TEXTILE ARTA AND CRAFTS 11 TAC FS 11
This course will be of particular interest to the student who has an appreciation of the skill and effort involved and the beauty created by techniques used in craft making. A variety of crafts will be created such as doll making, soft toys, machine and hand embroidery, seasonal decorations, attractive articles for home and personal use, room accessories, etc. Design and art principles will be studied.

Students will be required to complete several projects (crafts). Supplies are provided by the student.

TAC 11 satisfies both Fine Arts 11/Applied Skills 11 requirements for graduation.

TEXTILE ARTS AND CRAFTS 11Z TAC 11Z
(2 credits)
This half-semester course includes many of the aspects of the regular TAC 11 course. It must be chosen in a combination with CAPP 11.

FAMILY MANAGEMENT 11 FM 11
This course encourages personal growth through an examination of self and one's interactive relations with their family and their living environment. The development of healthy personal relationships will be studied as well as the development of the child from conception through adolescence. Students will also examine the processes of decision making and communication to encourage them to become more active and contributing members of the community and society.

FAMILY MANAGEMENT 12 FM 12
Presents many ideas and suggestions about family living, past, present and future.

 

  • how both families and individuals change in relationships and ways of living throughout the life cycle of childhood, youth, adulthood to old age.
  • To develop skills and knowledge for effective life management.
  • Recognize the interdependence of self, family and the community environment.
  • Focus on choosing, creating and evaluating living space (apartment, home) to meet human needs.

FOODS AND NUTRITION 12 FN 12
This course expands the scope of work covered in Foods and Nutrition 11. The production of more complicated food items requiring advanced techniques will be studied. Students will be concerned with nutritional values, food processing, cost factors, ethnic foods, etc.
Prerequisite: FN 11

LD CAFETERIA 11 XCAF 11
(Locally Developed)
Students rotate through all stations in a commercial training kitchen. Large scale food production is completed in soups, stocks, sauce, meat, vegetables, poultry, sandwiches, salads, short orders, service and introductory baking. Special consideration is given to safe, sanitary and hygienic food preparation. Knife handling and culinary art skills are developed. This course is designed for students who are not part of the "Food Services" Career Preparation Program.

CAFETERIA 12A CAF 12A
This course is a continuation of Cafeteria 11 at a more advanced and creative level.

Students complete various certification courses (such as Food Safe). Theory classes and demonstrations cover all facets of food production including the introduction of menu terminology and baking formulas. Experience may be gained by catering for large groups and banquets. This course is designed for students who are not part of the "Food Services" Career Preparation Program.
