LIFE SKILLS 8 (Keyboarding) LS 8
This section of the LS 8 course develops keyboarding skills on computers using the program All the Right Type. Students also gain skills on Dover Bay's computer system by using Windows and Microsoft Publisher to create attractive and useful projects.

LIFE SKILLS 8 (Information Skills)
This section of the LS 8 course is designed to develop research skills through the use of Microsoft Works for Windows and CDROMS. It also emphasizes organizational skills as students are required to prepare a notebook to hand in for marking. Specifically, students learn how to set short-term goals, to use Windows, Encarta, SIRS, WorldBook, Library references, Canadian Encyclopedia, Macleans Magazine and others.

APPLIED SKILLS Offered by the Business Education Department
Half-semester courses are available in Business Education. In order to graduate students are now required to obtain a minimum of one-half semester of Applied Skills courses. Students may take any of the regular four credit full semester courses in Business Education and use these credits as Applied Skills credits toward their graduation requirements.

APPLIED KEYBOARDING SKILLS 9/10 XKB 9/10
Learn the various skills necessary for making the computer a useful tool for you in the modern world while improving your keyboarding, word processing, desktop publishing, and problem solving skills.

This is a half semester course which may be combined with CAPP 9 or CAPP 10.

APPLIED BUSINESS ED 10 BE 10S
The course will help to prepare students when they begin to buy cars, rent or lease apartments, apply for loans and mortgages, and begin to live their own financial lives. There will be an emphasis on money management and banking, consumer protection laws, credit and personal finance, and insurance - how to establish a credit rating, get that first car loan, find a great apartment, and furnish it. Computer applications will be taught as students learn about financial survival for the future.

This is a half semester course which may be combined with CAPP 9 or CAPP 10.

APPLIED COMPUTER APPLICATION SKILLS 11 XCA 11
Students will have the opportunity to improve their skills in using computers, to explore several popular programs, and to develop competency in a variety of applications. The programs examined include Excel, Corel Draw, and Word Perfect Presentations.

This is a half semester course which may be combined with CAPP 9 or CAPP 10.

BUSINESS EDUCATION 10 BE 10
This course is an introduction to and a survey of the skills and knowledge students need to effectively manage the economic aspects of their lives. Topics such as career planning, marketing, personal financial management, communications, and the world of business are covered.

This course will be taught up to 50% of the time on a computer using Microsoft Works for Windows.

KEYBOARDING 11 KB 11

The purpose of this course is to develop keyboarding proficiency on the computer as a personal life skill and as a foundation for career development. Students will develop keyboarding speed and accuracy, correct keyboarding techniques, composition, editing, formatting, design and display techniques, and other personal and business applications and be encouraged to apply their skills to relevant work in other courses. Programming is not part of this course.

This course will be taught 100% of the time on computers. It is highly recommended that students take this course before taking any other computer courses.

COMPUTER KEYBOARDING ESSENTIALS 10/11 CKE 10/11LD
This course is useful for all students who wish to continue developing their keyboarding and computer skills, increasing their ability to apply the computer to personal, school, and business life. Topics will include word processing using Word Perfect for Windows, desktop publishing, keyboarding speed and accuracy, and career opportunities. Students may also use the computer for projects of their choice in areas such as art, creative writing, etc. Programming is not part of this course.

This course will be taught 100% of the time on computers.

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT 11 IM 11
This is a second level keyboarding course. This course introduces students to the creation and processing of business information using modern office technology, and continues the development of keyboarding and computer skills to employable levels. The course emphasizes the application of acquired skills to business documents and reinforces the communications and problem-solving skills, work habits and attitudes acceptable in a business environment.

This course will be taught 100% of the time on computers and students will be introduced to industry-standard software such as WordPerfect and electronic mail programs.

Prerequisite: Keyboarding 9/11 or equivalent skill level in keyboarding.

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS 11 CA 11
(Data Processing)
This is a 100% computer applications course which develops knowledge on most aspects of a computer (word processing, database, spreadsheet, telecommunications and graphics), but it does not include programming or keyboarding training. The integrated program, Microsoft Works, is the main one used, and additional major software programs are available for enrichment. The student will gain an understanding of the computer as a problem-solving tool, be encouraged to use the computer for other school projects, and research computer careers.

There is no prerequisite, although prior keyboarding skills are highly recommended.

ACCOUNTING 11 AC 11
Students need financial, economic, and consumer skills to survive in our complex society. This course is designed as an introduction to accounting concepts for those seeking entry-level employment skills or wanting to know how to keep proper financial records in private life. Students gain insights into financial problems and solutions which have far-reaching benefits for business and professional careers.

*Accounting 11 qualifies as a math requirement for graduation.

MARKETING 11 MK 11
Marketing skills and strategies have applications to many careers and lead to the development of positive personal attributes. This marketing course is a practical, activity-based introduction to the subject. Students will learn how to be productive and motivated employees and gain confidence in their ideas for creative self-employment. Topics include: consumer research, store operations, retail selling, promotion and advertizing.

This course will include projects done on computers.

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT 12 IM 12
This is the third course (after KB 9/11 and IM 11) that continues the development of keyboarding and computer skills to an employable, professional standard. Students will become proficient in WordPerfect and desktop publishing software. Other topics include job search skills, career exploration, business meetings and travel, and electronic mail.

Prerequisite: Information Management 11

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT 12 BM 12
In this course students develop the organizational and managerial skills necessary to function effectively in a business environment. Topics such as management styles and issues, problem-solving and decision-making skills, individual and group dynamics, and the effective management or resources will be highlighted.

This course will include time on computers using desktop publishing, electronic mail, the Internet, and Microsoft Works. Prior keyboarding skills are recommended.

CONSUMER ED 12 CE 12
The information covered in this course is the same as Business Education 10. You can only take BE 10 or CE 12 once for credit.

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS 12 CA 12
(Data Processing)

In this advanced, 100% computer applications course, the student is introduced to the use of industry-standard software tools for the analyzing and solving of business problems and the productions and presentation of professional quality computer reports. Students will learn the most popular advanced database, spreadsheet, desktop publishing, and communications programs used in business today.

Prerequisite: Data Processing 11

APPLIED ACCOUNTING 12 AA 12
This course enables the introductory accounting student to use industry-standard computer software packages and systems to analyze and solve accounting problems, to present professional-standard accounting reports, and to develop ethical standards in keeping with positions of responsibility and trust. The student will learn entry-level job skills in accounting. The student will also learn new concepts by completing a workbook based on current accounting principles. The two accounting programs studied are AccPac Simply Accounting and AccPac Plus 6.1.

Prerequisite: Accounting 11

FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING 12 FA 12
This course introduces students to more complex accounting concepts. Topics include manufacturing (cost) accounting, natural resources, receivables, intangible assets, income taxes and interpretation of financial statements. Financial accounting is intended for students who plan a career in accounting, those entering business administration who need a thorough understanding of accounting as an important element of the total business information system, and those students from a variety of other disciplines who will find the ability to use and interpret accounting information a valuable accomplishment.

Prerequisite: Accounting 11

MARKETING 12 MK 12
Marketing 12 is a study of national and international marketing and includes the Pacific Rim countries. The focus is on manufacturing and service industries as opposed to the retailing focus of Marketing 11. Students will be given the opportunity to apply theory to practical, creative marketing projects and computers will be available for these projects. Skills required for marketing careers or post-secondary courses will also be developed.
